2023 Pacific APA Meeting
On Sex Differences and Gender Identity
Organized by Maximiliana Jewett Rifkin (CUNY Graduate Center )
Co-organizers John Bickle (Mississippi State University and University of Mississippi Medical Center), and Mike Lehman (Kent State University)
This work group meeting will explore neuroscientific and philosophical work on gender identity and its relation to constructs like ‘neural sex differences’ and ‘sexual orientation’. It aims to familiarize neuroscientists and philosophers with work on these topics in their respective fields and to promote interdisciplinary collaboration in their study.
Our first neuroscience session focuses on neuroscientific work on the constructs of ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity’. The session includes talks on these topics by Dr. Charles Rosseli of Oregon Health and Science University and Dr. Ivanka Savic of University of California, Los Angeles and the Karolinska Institute. The focus of this session is on developing a more interdisciplinary understanding of the nature of and relations between neural sex differences, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
Our second session focuses on philosophical investigations of work on sex differences and gender identity in neuroscience. It includes talks by Dr. Robyn Bluhm of Michigan State and Maximiliana Rifkin of the CUNY Graduate Center. This session will focus on cultivating an interdisciplinary perspective on how neuroscientific research on sex differences and gender identity should be conducted.
