Previous Meeting Programs

The Deep South Philosophy & Neuroscience Workgroup (DSPNW) holds an annual three-day workshop meeting, Philosophy & Neuroscience @The Gulf, in late September or early October at the Pensacola Beach Hilton Hotel in Pensacola Beach, Florida. These workshop meetings feature invited neuroscience keynote presentations, invited and contributed philosophy talks on philosophy of neuroscience, cognitive science, and philosophy of mind, symposia, and panel discussions. The relaxed beachfront atmosphere, and generous break times, foster lively and productive exchange among graduate students, post-docs and junior faculty, and highly regarded researchers. (It was not until our third meeting that we adopted the name “Philosophy & Neuroscience @The Gulf,” thus the 2018 and 2019 meeting programs do not reflect this nomenclature, nor include our cool brain graphics or photos of the spectacular venue).

2018 First meeting of the Deep South Philosophy & Neuroscience Workgroup held in conjunction with the Alabama Philosophical Society; Retroactively P&N @ The Gulf I

The Deep South Philosophy & Neuroscience Workgroup also holds sessions at the annual regional meetings of The American Philosophical Association (APA), a joint invited session at the annual meeting of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology, contributed session(s) at the biennial meeting of the Philosophy of Science Association (PSA), and occasional contributed sessions at the annual meeting of the Mid-South Philosophy Conference.

DSPNW is an APA affiliate group. We have held meetings at the following division meetings (links to programs via blog posts):

DSPNW became affiliated with the SSPP in 2024. We now hold a joint philosophy and psychology session at SSPP’s annual meeting.

Before becoming affiliated with SSPP, DSPNW held two “special spring” workshops in conjunction with the Mid-South Philosophy Conference at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.
